Meditation Shrine

Akanishta Buddhist Center was founded in 1999 by the request of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Open link in new window as a non-profit organization and member of the New Kadampa Tradition Open link in new window (NKT). Geshe Kelsang is one of the most widely respected Buddhist masters living in the west today. He was born in Tibet and from a very early age studied extensively in the great monastic universities. After receiving his Geshe degree, he spent the next 18 years in retreat in the Himalayas. In 1977 he was invited to teach in England and has since founded over 700 NKT centers and branches throughout the world. His purpose for creating Akanishta Buddhist Center is to make Kadampa Buddhism available in Madison and the greater Wisconsin area in order to help people find peace and happiness in their lives.
